In Matthew 24, Jesus gives us a timeline as to how the end of human history will unfold and how understanding the kingdom will be vital to reading the signs of these times. He says, “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. … But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs [Days of Sorrows]. Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. … Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many and because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold. … This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.”
Jesus begins by describing the beginning of the birth pangs as a time characterized by nations rising against nations and kingdoms against kingdoms. The Greek for nations here means literally a people or a nation, while kingdoms is the same one used throughout the New Testament to define God’s kingdom come to earth. It means a spiritual realm, rule, or reign.
When Jesus says nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom, He is not merely restating the same point using different words, as I supposed for many years. No, the kingdom of heaven on earth is one realm, and the kingdom of man and religion ruled by the principalities of darkness is the other. Jesus is speaking of the time I believe we now live in, where the final clash between not only nations of earth but also the two diametrically opposed spiritual realms has begun!
