“Therefore, you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.\u201d (Matt. 5:48)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cConsider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing\u201d (Jas. 1: 2-4).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A growing movement of Christians now take Jesus\u2019 command to \u201cbe perfect\u201d to mean sinless perfection in the flesh, claiming it to be a level of faith that is there for us, but we just haven\u2019t achieved it yet. I believe what He was saying referred to our journey in the spirit more than our destination in the flesh. Once again, as with all matters in this life, it comes down to which kingdom we believe in and embrace, the kingdom of man or the kingdom of heaven on earth and what does perfection look like in each of those kingdoms?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking at two very similar \u201csummary\u201d statements Jesus and Paul, the two most notable figures in the New Testament, proclaimed as their ministries on earth came to a close sheds light on this. When they proclaimed these truths there was nothing left for them to do, nothing left out of the messages they were to bring, and nothing left of faith to manifest in the way they lived. There would be no \u201cPS\u201d to these two proclamations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John 19 records Jesus\u2019 last words on the cross before He gave up His spirit to the Father, \u201cTherefore, when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, \u2018It is finished!\u2019 And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.\u201d The word in the Greek for \u201cfinished\u201d is tetalestai<\/em>, which means \u201ccomplete, to conclude, accomplished, make an end of, finish.\u201d Again, nothing left to say or do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the very same word Paul uses in 2nd<\/sup> Timothy 4, where he begins, \u201cThe time of my departure has come.\u201d It was time for him to go. The end. Done here. Just like Jesus on the cross, He knew his life on earth was nearing the end. He continues, \u201cI have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.\u201d He fought the best of fights and had, as Jesus also said, accomplished everything God gave him to do. In his journey with God, He had kept the faith, there was no lack of it he had preached, believed, or displayed. His words, \u201cI have fought, finished, and kept all\u201d indicate two things: his life was a process that took endurance to accomplish. Finally, he says, \u201cIn the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness.\u201dWhat higher goal could any believer hope to attain to than this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As similar as their life-summaries were, there was one notable difference between Jesus and Paul, and between Jesus and every man and woman who have lived on this earth ever since. While Jesus was indeed \u201ctempted in all things as are we, and yet without sin\u201d (Heb. 4), Paul struggled with sin in his flesh, as his confession in 1 Timothy 1, \u201cIt is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all,\u201d and Romans 7 point out. If Paul, the one chosen by God to write more of the NT than any other individual, would have attained to perfection in the flesh, don\u2019t you think he would have shouted it from the rooftops as the best news of all? Wouldn\u2019t the pages of his letters to the churches be veritably laced with proclamations Paul made it to that \u201cHeavenly Father perfection\u201d in the flesh if that is what Jesus truly commanded? Had Paul attained such heights he would have clearly said so, for there could be no possible better news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather, he revealed the shortcomings of even the most faithful men ever to live when he said, \u201cFor now we see in a mirror dimly\u2026Now I know in part\u2026 (1 Cor. 13).\u201d In fact, Paul said, \u201cMost gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me\u201d (2 Cor. 12). Doesn\u2019t sound like Paul thought he was God-like or a sinless man like Jesus, does it? He wasn\u2019t God, wasn\u2019t born of immaculate, sinless conception, was not sinless in the flesh, and never claimed to be. Nor was he neutral on the issue as the prior paragraph shows. No, Paul was very open about his struggles and shortcomings in the flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two of the passages those who promote the sinless man doctrine love to quote are Romans 6-8, where Paul asks how we who are dead to sin can go on living with it and how we have been freed from sin. They also quote 1 John 3, \u201cNo one who abides in Him sins. No one who sins has seen Him or knows Him.\u201d Ah, but there, right in the middle of Romans 6 and 8 is Paul\u2019s confession in Romans 7, and also in 1 John we read, \u201cIf we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.\u201d Same authors, same books. It cannot be argued these conflicting verses were somehow written to different audiences, because they are found in the same books with each other. So, what gives? Again, different kingdoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, Paul did claim perfection in God\u2019s kingdom! In Philippians 3 he says, \u201cI do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as are<\/em> perfect<\/em>, have this attitude\u2026\u201d What gives? What gives is what kingdom you look at it through. Paul was saying while he had not arrived yet, he would forever press on towards God\u2019s perfection in the kingdom, the Spirit, for Paul also said, \u201cBut earnestly desire the greater gifts and I will show you a still more excellent way\u201d (1 Cor. 12), and, \u201cIf anyone supposes that he knows anything<\/em> he has not yet known as he ought to know\u201d (1 Cor. 8). Again, a process persisting from one level of faith and understanding to another, yet never arriving because there is ever, and always, a higher calling in Christ. And how did Paul say this perfection was found, stated just before the perfection was stated? \u201cI press on toward the goal!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All these verses that mention \u201cperfect, accomplished, and finished\u201d we have looked at come from the root \u201ctelos.\u201d While it includes an element of perfection, it doesn\u2019t mean becoming like God, or sinless perfection in the flesh, but rather \u201cof full age, completeness of character, full-grown, accomplished, finished, end, fulfillment.\u201d Paul would ask of those who believe we must become perfect like God in the flesh, or we failed to somehow understand or believe fully in Him, \u201cAre you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh\u201d (Gal. 3)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James tells us specifically what the path to this perfection is using the same word in the Greek Jesus used when He commanded us to be perfect<\/em>, and it\u2019s precisely the way Paul did it and thus proclaimed himself and others \u201cperfect.\u201d James scribes the most complete and highest promise in all Scripture above from James 1, and it is wrapped up in simply enduring the journey. This was the same thing Paul was saying in Philippians 3 and 2nd<\/sup> Timothy 4: \u201cPressing on\u2026fighting the fight\u2026running the race\u2026keeping the faith.\u201d \u201cI am enduring!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul also said when speaking of the righteous judgment of God, \u201cHe will render to each person according to his deeds: to those who by perseverance in doing good<\/em> seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life\u2026\u201d (Rom. 2). In Matthew and Mark, Jesus says twice while prophesying of end times, \u201cHe who endures<\/em> to the end shall be saved.\u201d To the churches of Revelation, He speaks no less than eight times of those who overcome<\/em> [endure] receiving the crown<\/em>, just as Paul said his crown<\/em> of righteousness would be awaiting him after he ran well the journey in this life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book of Hebrews tells us Jesus was doing two things on the cross before He said it was finished and surrendered His Spirit: First, He was learning obedience, for \u201cAlthough He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered. And having been made perfect<\/em>, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation\u201d (Heb. 5). Furthermore, Hebrews tells us Jesus was enduring<\/em> His own journey, \u201cFor the joy set before Him, He endured<\/em> the cross, despising the shame\u201d (Heb. 12). Even Jesus was enduring and learning through the many trials that call for faith in this life and was perfected through them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Luke 11, we read a parable concerning a \u201cfriend\u201d who goes to another friend to ask food from him in the middle of the night to feed a guest he is entertaining. Initially, the friend says no because of the hour of the night. However, Jesus says though the man would not get up and supply him because he is the man\u2019s friend, he will give him what he wants simply because he is persistent. In John 15 Jesus called His disciples \u201cfriends,\u201d using the same word in the Greek used in Luke, because they \u201ckept His commands.\u201d So, what is He saying between John 15 and Luke 11? Even those He calls friend may not get what they\u2019re looking for if they\u2019re not persistent [enduring]! Here again, it was persistence over the long haul that gained the prize, even though we are called His friends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Jesus was commanding is the same thing Paul said he was about in life and what he had accomplished: full growth! What was the method? To keep on pressing on, seeking the ever-higher calling of God and constantly believing there was a higher call no matter what level he eclipsed. Jesus was saying, \u201cI want you to attain to full spiritual maturity here in this life, to be complete, and never stop pressing on. I want you to finish well, knowing you have accomplished the work I gave you to do!\u201d And isn\u2019t this the Great Commission? to make those disciples who observe all<\/em> [finish, accomplish, complete] Jesus commanded?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The message here is it\u2019s about the journey<\/em> and not the arrival. And it\u2019s about the book that\u2019s written on us largely after the journey is coming to an end. It\u2019s then we have endured and it\u2019s then we, like Jesus and Paul, can say, \u201cIt is accomplished.\u201d Perfection is about the kingdoms and which one we run in. Those who truly follow Jesus never arrive at perfection in the kingdom of man, for that is not what Jesus called us to. The Pharisees pursued that and missed Jesus altogether. I can sum it up no better than Paul when, again, he said it is foolishness to try to perfect in the flesh what God began, and is perfecting, in the Spirit. Until kingdom saints leave this earth, they will be on a never-ending journey of seeking the perfection Jesus commanded through enduring in faith, and that\u2019s all He could ever command or ask of us.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
